Elected in 2013 to the Elizabeth City Council at the age of 22, Montravias Dvarius King became one of the youngest elected officials in the nation. Mr. King views himself not as a politician, but as a public servant with a spiritual mandate to tackle the social and political issues of his generation. King began his leadership and oratorical journey at the age of 15, in a humble storefront church called Powerhouse Church of God in Stantonsburg, NC, where he was ordained as a Christian youth minister. Mr. King most recently keynoted a NGO Conference on Civil Rights at the United Nations, in New York, New York.
Mr. King is a frequent guest commentator for the Huffington Post Live and the HBCU Nation radio show. King’s story has also been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, BET News, MSNBC, and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, to name a few. In 2013, the NC NAACP awarded Mr. King the “Political Action Trailblazer Award,” and in 2014 King was named “Young Elected Official of the Year” by the Young Democrats of North Carolina.
Mr. King is currently employed by the Washington County Public Schools System, were he teaches high school history and civics classes. From the pulpit of rural churches in Eastern North Carolina to the great halls of the United Nations in New York, King’s courage to stand up for his rights and the rights of others has motivated thousands to action in their respective communities. Mr. King is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Mr. King lives by this quote “Courage will not skip this generation” from Mrs. Roslyn M. Brock, the Chair of the National NAACP Board of Directors. King credits his success to: faith in God, strong family support, and great mentors.
Mr. King is now focused on making a difference in the lives of students, because he realizes that they are the leaders of tomorrow. Mr. King knows from experience that leadership is taught. Mr. King serves as advisor for the History & Political Science Club at Plymouth High School, and coordinates the freshmen bridge program. Mr. King has taught kindergarten, middle school, and high school. Mr. King enjoys traveling, reading, writing, politics, fishing, football, and spending time with his family.
